Giuliani Right Hand Studies 1 (Submitted by Joesf Glaude)
Mauro Giuliani was the guitar virtuoso of the Classical Era. His 120 Right Hand Studies were
originally published in 1812. When I began studies of classical guitar my teacher gave me these
as the best starting point for gaining right hand familiarity of the
guitar. I have only listed the first 10 studies because they are the
easiest and create a solid foundation, not just for Classical guitar, but for fingerstyle players in general.
The method uses only two chords; C and G7. The fingers of the right hand are listed P I M A.
P is your thumb, I is your 1rst finger, M is your 2nd finger and A is your 3rd finger.
The best way to practice these is;
1. Practice slowly. Speed comes with time and familiarity.
2. Practice by preparing the fingers of BOTH hands on the strings before they are needed.
3. Anticipate left hand changes instead of focusing on where the hand is.
4. Practice emphasizing different fingers within the chord (arpeggio).
i.e. Accent the "P" while playing the I,M,A. This develops a sense of the
independence of the fingers as well as dynamics.
I have ordered them according to the single line studies not numerically as Giuliani had
written them (hence the Study 1 - 10, Study 16 and 17). I will add the studies with Bass later and eventually the Chords. If you are impatient to pick up
all the studies the FJH Music Company has a very affordable transcription - however, there in
none in TAB for those who cannot read music.
