On Tuesday February 21, 2006 we presented the first Fingerstyle Showcase concert at Oral Roberts University's Timko-Barton Performance Hall, featuring local fingerstyle guitarists
covering a number of styles. ORU students Joel Harmon and Cate
Bender started the evening off with pieces by Bach and Giuliani.
ORU instructors Chris Brown and Geoff Logan followed with a piece by
Vivaldi. Next was the Rosewood Duo (Melinda Acevedo on flute
and Rod Saunders on guitar) playing the first movement of Erik
Satie's Gymnopedie. The evening then took a rapid
departure from the classical genre when J.T. Gentry demonstrated his
instrumental percussion technique on a couple of original
tunes. This was followed by Philip Ansteth, J.T. Gentry, and
Rod Saunders playing the flamenco-oriented Sevillanas,
complete with percussionists, a bassist, and two dancers. Next
was recording artist Joesf Glaude playing his harp guitar, followed
by a duet with Joesf and Pete Astor, and jazz trio with Joesf, Pete,
and Martin Perez. After that Pete brought the house down with
his incredible tapping based original tune entitled Pete's Wakeup
Call. This was followed by Louis Drapp of Drapp Studios in
Tulsa demonstrating some Travis-style picking on Goodbye World,
Goodbye. The evening came to a close with Jeffrey
Hiatt-Frink's version of Phil Keaggy's County Down, featuring
a combination of tapping, percussion, and an accompanying echo
machine. While the applause for Jeffrey continued everybody
came up for a final bow and a thank you to the crowd for supporting
the music that we play.
If you listen closely to the lady in this video taken from the end of the concert you'll hear her tell her male companion "see? there's fun things to do in Tulsa ... we just never hear about them!", which is why we do what we do to let people know about the fine fingerstyle guitarists in our area.
