GUITAR CONCERT

By Fred W. Wienecke

One hundred audience members were treated to a remarkable concert Tuesday evening, March 6, in the performance theater of ORU’s Timko-Barton Hall.

Sponsored by the Tulsa Guitar Society, the semi-annual free concert included 16 performances and 22 performers all of whom are fans of finger style guitar methods and acoustic guitars.

The concert was remarkable.  The performances included flamenco guitarists, new age and jazz to pure classical music.  The youngest performer was 15 years of age.  The oldest was near retirement age.  There were new comers to the Tulsa guitar scene and there were local legends.  The common thread was great music.

The Tulsa Guitar Society is a year and a half old, and it’s membership is growing. With two concerts a year showcasing local talent and monthly meetings where that talent is shared and enjoyed,  the society is gaining respect and momentum.

A look at the Tulsa Guitar Society’s website at www.TulsaGuitar.org indicates the depth of devotion to the guitar and its music.  Reading the notes of the last several monthly meetings includes talks by luthiers, musicians and their tips for aspiring guitarists.

Although there is no tie to ORU, there is a definite connection due to the number of guitarists with personal ties the University.  Several founding members of the society are past or present members of ORU faculty or student body.  But that’s where it ends.

The fall concert scheduled for Tuesday, September 18, is eagerly anticipated by Tulsa’s music elite.  Put that date on your calendar.  It’s one of the best music deals you’re likely to find anywhere.
