The Tulsa Guitar Society started up in the summer of 2005 after the founder
Rod Saunders attended a guitar concert in Wichita, Kansas that was hosted by the Wichita Guitar Society. While discussing their society with its director John Francis, Rod was inspired to see something similar established in
Tulsa, thinking "Wichita's no bigger than Tulsa and it's a blue collar town with all of its aircraft industry. It's no more arts-oriented than Tulsa. If they can support a guitar society we can!" Rod scoured the internet looking for classical, flamenco, and fingerstyle guitarists in the Tulsa area and began an email campaign to locate interested parties.
The first meeting was held in September with five people.
It was a small but dedicated group. They agreed that the first thing they needed to do was build a website so they all pitched in and registered a domain name and soon tulsaguitar.org was launched. Since then many of the first time visitors to the monthly meetings simply came across the website, learned about the society, and showed up. Word is now spreading around town that
we have a fingerstyle guitar club in Tulsa.
Currently the Tulsa Guitar Society is in the process of obtaining tax-exempt status as a non-profit organization. In time we plan to develop - An artist concert series - Many renowned guitarists perform in Dallas and Kansas City but bypass Tulsa because up until now there hasn't been a guitar society to bring them here. We want to change that and bring them here to perform in Tulsa as well. This would bring a significant contribution to the local arts scene.
- An outreach program to Tulsa schools - It's a proven fact that when kids are involved in music they do better in school. If they do better in school, they'll do better in life and they'll make better citizens and better communities as a result. We want to work with local schools in arranging for members of the society to perform for kids to get them excited about playing the guitar, as well as open their minds to playing different styles of music on the guitar other than country or rock as they discover what a versatile instrument the guitar is.
- An outreach program to underprivileged kids - Many kids would like to play the guitar but either can't afford one or can't afford lessons. We hope to work with charity organizations to put guitars in the hands of these kids and provide an instructor so that they can learn.
- A benefit concert program - We plan on regularly performing for fundraisers for other non-profit and charity organizations. We are currently working on such a benefit concert for the Oklahoma Blood Institute.
We meet on the second Sunday of every month from 3-6 PM at Agora Internet Cafe at 51st & Memorial in the Fontana Shopping Center in Tulsa. The meetings are free and open to the public.
